The Foggy Dew
written by Rev.Charles O'Neill

'Twas down the glen one Easter morn
To a city fair rode I
There, armed lines of marching clans
In squadrons passed me by
No pipe did hum and no battle drum
Did sound its loud tattoo
But the Angelus bell o'er the Liffey's swell
Rang out in the foggy dew

Right proudly high over Dublin town
They hung out the flag of war
'Twas better to fight 'neath an Irish sky
Than at die at Suvla or Sud-el-bar
And from the plains of Royal Meath
Strong clans came hurrying through
While Britannia's huns with their great big guns
Sailed in with the foggy dew

'Twas England bade our wild geese go
That small nations might be free
Their lonely graves are by Suvla's waves
On the fringe of the great North Sea
Had they died by Connolly's side
Or fought with Cathal Brugha
Their names we would keep where the Fenians sleep
'Neath the shroud of the foggy dew

The bravest fell, and the Requiem bell
Rang mournfully and clear
For those who died that Eastertide
In the springtime of the year
And the world did gaze in deep amaze
At those fearless ones and few
Who fought for the right that freedom's light
Might shine through the foggy dew

Back down the Glen I rode again
Me heart with grief full sore
For I parted then with valiant friends
I n'er would see more
To and fro in my dreams I go
And I'll always think of you
For slavery fled Oh! our Rebel dead
When you fought in the Foggy Dew!
